The return of the USS Georgia to service on 28 MAR 2008 marks the completion of the Navy's project to convert the first four ballistic missile submarines (commonly called boomers by Sailors) to guided missile boats.

In some years you will be converting them back to boomers if the Chinese continue their buildup and Russians keep on thinking they own, or whould own, certain parts of the world. Nothing like a few silent, undetectable city killers to keep someone on check.
Who every wrote that the Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia were the first boomers does not know much about the cold war. I served on the Georgia when it was a SSBN as a FTB-Fire Control Tech. Ballistic. I also served on one of the original "41 for freedom" boomers the USS Casimir Pulaki SSBN 633 gold crew.
